The NH35A is a 24-jewel automatic movement produced by Seiko's Micro Mechanics & Electronics (TMI) subsidiary. It runs at 21,600 beats per hour (6 beats per second, or 3Hz), has a 41-hour power reserve, hacks (the seconds hand stops when you pull the crown to set the time), and hand-winds from the crown. Those four features — hacking, hand-wind, beat rate, power reserve — define it as a modern entry-level movement worthy of a watch you intend to use daily.
Context in the Seiko Line
Seiko uses two movement tiers for its volume watches. The 7S series (7S26, 7S36) is the budget tier: no hacking, no hand-wind, fine for a casual piece but harder to set precisely. The 4R and NH series adds hacking and hand-wind, making it noticeably more practical for daily wear.
The NH35 and NH36 are closely related. The NH35 has a plain white seconds track; the NH36 adds a day complication (showing the day of the week in addition to the date). Many JDM Seiko 5 Sports references use the NH36 specifically because the day/date display is valued in the domestic market.
The NH35A succeeded the 4R35 in the Seiko catalog around 2019. The movements are functionally identical — same ébauche, same specifications — with the "NH" designation reflecting a rebrand rather than an engineering change. Some resellers still describe watches as running the "4R35" when the movement has been updated to NH35A production; the practical difference is zero.
What It Means for JDM Arbitrage
A Seiko watch with NH35 or NH36 movement in a solid case and a compelling JDM-only dial typically lands in the ¥20,000-55,000 range on Yahoo Auctions Japan. The same watch, if it has no direct US authorized dealer equivalent, can sell for $200-400 on eBay or Mercari US. That spread — roughly 30-50% after fees, shipping, and customs — is where most entry-level JDM Seiko arbitrage lives.
The movement itself is not a limiting factor in that spread. NH35-powered watches are reliable, serviceable, and supported by Seiko's service network globally. They do not require pre-purchase servicing unless the seller explicitly notes mechanical problems.
Common NH35-Powered JDM References
Several of the most liquid JDM arbitrage references run NH35 or NH36:
- SARB033 / SARB035 (cocktail time dress watch)
- SARB017 (alpinist)
- SARB065 (cocktail time)
- SBDC051 / SBDC053 / SBDC081 / SBDC083 (Prospex Sumo)
- Most Seiko 5 Sports SBSA-series
The SARB series was discontinued around 2019 and now trades at a premium on the secondary market, sustained partly by the NH35's reliable reputation. A clean SARB033 in 美品 condition will clear $300+ on eBay while still available on Yahoo Auctions Japan for ¥25,000-40,000 depending on the listing season.
Service Interval
Seiko recommends a full service (movement cleaning, lubricating, gasket replacement) every 3-5 years for the NH35. In practice, NH35-powered watches run well for 10+ years without service if stored and worn normally. The JDM secondary market frequently produces OH済 (overhauled) listings for NH35 watches; that notation adds a modest premium and removes the service uncertainty for buyers who want a clean slate on the movement.
