Why Hako-tsuki Affects Value
For most JDM watches in the collector market, original box presence adds a measurable premium to US resale prices. The extent of the premium varies by model. For standard production pieces like the Seiko SARB033 or SKX009, the box adds roughly 10 to 15 percent to final sale price on eBay. For vintage references and Grand Seiko models, a complete set with box and papers (箱保付き) can add 20 to 40 percent over a no-box equivalent.
Tonbo does not currently stratify US comp data by box-present versus no-box. The US median shown on alert cards reflects all sold listings regardless of completeness. This means a 箱付き listing at a given price may have better economics than the headline margin suggests, and a no-box listing may be worse.

Japanese sellers use several shorthand combinations to describe completeness:
- 箱付き (hako-tsuki): with box
- 箱なし (hako-nashi): no box
- 保証書あり (hoshousho-ari): with warranty card or papers
- 箱保付き (hako-hoshou-tsuki): with box and papers, full set
- 純正ブレス付き (junsei-bures-tsuki): with original bracelet
Full-set listings (箱保付き) consistently achieve the highest prices in both the Japanese and US secondary markets. A collector-grade Seiko or Grand Seiko with the original inner and outer box, warranty card, and swing tag is materially different from the same watch sold loose.
How to Read Completeness in Listings
Completeness disclosures are inconsistent on Japanese platforms. Many sellers list 箱付き prominently to attract buyers. No-box listings often do not disclose the absence explicitly and instead describe only what is present. When evaluating a listing, check the photos for the presence of box and paperwork rather than relying on the title alone.
